We are thrilled to announce that Montgomery Public Schools Security Officer Paula Sizemore-Russick has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious Courage in Crisis Award. Chosen from among nominees across Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, Officer Sizemore-Russick’s exceptional bravery and swift action during a recent crisis have earned her this well-deserved recognition.

During a recent safety incident at Capitol Heights Middle School, Officer Sizemore-Russick was confronted with a student-pedestrian hit-and-run just outside the school grounds. As the injured victim lay in the street, Officer Sizemore-Russick did not hesitate. Without concern for her own safety, she rushed to the victim's side, immediately administering first aid.

In an act of remarkable selflessness, she placed herself in harm’s way, using her own body to shield the victim from oncoming traffic, potentially saving him from further injury or even death. Her quick thinking and composure in the midst of such chaos likely prevented additional vehicles from striking the victim, buying critical time for emergency responders to arrive.

But her efforts didn’t stop there. Officer Sizemore-Russick also provided emotional support to the victim and the surrounding bystanders, offering reassurance and guidance in what was undoubtedly a terrifying situation for everyone involved. Her leadership, calm demeanor, and compassion during a high-stress crisis are qualities that embody the very spirit of the Courage in Crisis Award.

Thanks to Officer Sizemore-Russick’s quick response, the victim was stabilized and transported for medical care. What could have been a far worse outcome was, in large part, averted due to her heroic actions.

We are proud to have Officer Sizemore-Russick as part of our MPS family. Her dedication to the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community is nothing short of inspiring. Her actions remind us all of the profound impact that one person can have in a moment of crisis.
