
Jazz—America’s music—filled the halls of Booker T. Washington High yesterday as our students participated in the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz’s National Peer-to-Peer Jazz Education Program! 🎷 Featuring internationally acclaimed saxophonist Don Braden and vocalist Lisa Henry, along with some of the best young musicians from across the country, this event was an unforgettable day of music, learning, and inspiration. As one of only eight districts nationwide selected, our students collaborated in workshops with gifted high school musicians. Thanks to the Alabama Power Classroom grants, two of our amazing teachers from Bear Exploration Academy, Ms. Keisha Graves (3rd grade) and Mrs. Maria Ball (1st grade), are receiving up to $1,000 each for classroom materials!
Ms. Graves will use her grant for The Great Outdoor Classroom project, which includes building a sensory garden and weather station in the school’s Certified Alabama Outdoor Classroom. This hands-on project will inspire curiosity and creativity while deepening students' understanding of science and nature.
Mrs. Ball's Mindful Minds, Mindful Hands project will enhance learning experiences by providing resources to create a more engaging classroom environment, fostering academic growth for her first-grade students.

This prestigious program brings together young jazz musicians from across the country to collaborate with our students, sharing their passion and knowledge of jazz. Our students will not only learn about the history of this legendary genre but also the important life values it embodies: diversity, teamwork, and perseverance.

This past Saturday, the wonderful students from the William Silas Garrett Elementary School Choir had the honor of performing during halftime at the Huntingdon College Men’s Basketball Game! 🏀🐊 This marks the choir’s second year being invited to perform! A special shoutout to Ms. Shaw for her dedication and commitment to the students and the music program. Congratulations to the choir on a job well done!

Congrats to Baldwin Arts and Academics Magnet Middle School spelling bee winners! Leah Uhm (8th grade) took home 1st place winner, Aryan Gupta (6th grade) placed 2nd, and Erin Shin (7th grade) took 3rd. Leah will head to the Scripps competition, and all three will compete at the the district spelling bee in May!
